Tables of Correspondence
Correspondences are the grammar of magic: the agreed-upon links between a colour, a planet, a day, an element and a purpose, so that a working can be built in layers that all say the same thing. They are a tool for focus, not a law of nature. Learn ours, then write your own over the top.
The elements
Most Wiccan traditions place the elements as below. Some put Air in the north and Earth in the east; some traditional witches use a different compass altogether. This is the arrangement the Hearth uses, and it is the commonest.
| Element | Direction | Colour | Time | Season | Tool | Qualities | Creatures |
| Air | East | Yellow, pale blue | Dawn | Spring | Athame or wand; incense | Thought, communication, beginnings, breath, the mind | Birds, the sylph, the hawk |
| Fire | South | Red, orange, gold | Noon | Summer | Wand or athame; candle | Will, passion, courage, transformation, energy | The lion, the salamander, the stag |
| Water | West | Blue, sea green, silver | Dusk | Autumn | Chalice; cauldron | Feeling, intuition, healing, dreams, the heart | Fish, the undine, the salmon, the seal |
| Earth | North | Green, brown, black | Midnight | Winter | Pentacle; salt; stone | Body, stability, prosperity, the home, silence | The bull, the gnome, the bear, the hare |
| Spirit | Centre | White, violet, black | Always | The turning itself | The circle; the cord | Unity, the divine, that which holds the four | The witch |
The days of the week
| Day | Planet | Colour | Good for |
| Sunday | Sun | Gold, yellow | Success, health, vitality, the God, confidence, blessing |
| Monday | Moon | Silver, white | Intuition, dreams, the Goddess, the home, emotions, fertility |

Building a working
Say you need courage for a hard conversation. Red candle; Tuesday if you can wait, the waxing moon if you can wait longer; a pinch of basil and nettle; facing south; the words spoken three times. Every layer says the same thing, so your mind cannot wander. That is all correspondence is for. If your gut says the conversation needs blue and a Friday, listen to your gut and write it down.
